5 ways to Celebrate the Summer Solstice

It’s here! Finally!

Today is the day! The longest day, with the shortest night - sound the trumpets - it’s summmmerrrrr!

Trust me, it’s no coincidence The Carters dropped Everything is Love this week. I mean, the entire album is basically an anthem for summer solstice abundance. It’s a dreamy ode to basking in glorious opulence, indulging the senses; of melting, easing into heightened warmth, then cooling in blue waters...all of it. The thirst!

It’s been a slow burn. Since spring, we’ve been slowly melting, inviting in the warmth of growing light, adjusting our eyes to the brightening air.

We’ve been nursing and tending to those new ideas, those new intentions that want to make themselves felt and seen.

Slowly, the icy layers of the shadow months have slipped away.

Summer doesn’t come at once. Like everything else, we grow into it. Just as the earth enters a period of renewal, so too does our internal cycle move with the momentum of regeneration, renewal and rebirth.

I always forget how attuned we are with the seasons. Our bodies, moods, relationships - singularly and collectively - all move intuitively in a cyclical nature. Round and round we go, turning over the same stones each time, often picking up new ones, setting some down.

These phases move through us just as we are moved by them. So, it’s nice to acknowledge and welcome the energy of a new phase as it arrives.

Here are some ideas for how you might want to harness the energy of the summer solstice:

Set intentions

Summer is peak time for manifestation. What is it that you want to call forth into your life? What needs more attention? What needs tending to, or patience, to ripen?

Make a list of things you want to see, do, and make. Find some images that represent fecundity, abundance. Place those around you and BASK. Think PEAK EXCESS of everything wonderful that you have been working towards and DESERVE.

Watch the sunrise/ sunset and TAKE IT IN.

This is real. We have our own star, just for us. The sun. It’s a giant ball of fire that could kill us. But, as we are at the perfect distance, it warms us, ripens our seeds, makes manifest the seeds already planted.

Tonight, go outside and watch the colours of the sky go from peach to pink, to lavender. Notice the clouds and how they move softly, like laundry in a sink of water. Take in the contrasting energy of twilight, that special AF time when everything looks dreamily close and faraway. Breathe into the farewell kiss of the sun as he descends, like a lover’s embrace; still felt long after they’ve let go.

Go say hello to the Sun

Go outside, stay there a while. Turn your face towards the light and close your eyes. Take in the red you see, the warm presence you feel.

Welcome growth and healing

This is a great time to check in with yourself about areas in your life where you would like to feel more ease.

Take your doubts, fears, anxieties - any burdens that are weighing on you - imagine offering them up to a force that’s bigger than you. The sun has been there since the beginning. Acknowledge the ways you are taken care of, and radiate how good it feels to know that. Welcome the sun’s energy into areas of your life that need to heal and expand.

Play

What do children do in the sunshine? They go outside and play! They go knock on their friend’s doors and say, “Can you come out and play?”

Call your pals, plan a day trip somewhere green and lush. Gather ‘round a backyard fire. Meet in the park for a picnic.

We are all born with an innate sense of play. If you already have a creative outlet, now is a great time to manifest the project that’s already been the the works behind the curtain. What does the six-year-old-you want to do? What do they have to say? Listen.

If you want to try something new - now’s the time to do it. Don’t worry about the outcome, just keep it moving, after all, it’s just play.
